Telford is a New Town, founded in 1963 as Dawley New Town. The name was changed in 1968 to honour Thomas Telford, a Surveyor of Public Works in Shropshire. The Iron Bridge at Ironbridge, now part of Telford, is the first cast-iron bridge of its size in the world, and Ironbridge Gorge is a World Heritage Site. In nearby Shifnal, St Andrews' Church has a Norman chancel and an Elizabethan double-hammerbeam roof.
